The Ahrntal – a jewel near Bruneck

THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE AHRNTAL VALLEY

The Tauferer Ahrntal is a side valley of the Pustertal and stretches from Bruneck to Kasern at the Birnlücke. The Ahrntal begins at Luttach and includes the villages of Luttach, St. Johann, Steinhaus, St. Jakob, St. Peter, Prettau and Kasern, with the village of Prettau forming its own municipality.

Luttach, called “Luchta” in dialect, lies at the beginning of the municipality of Ahrntal and is framed by the picturesque backdrop of the Zillertal Alps and 14 three- thousanders. It is the second largest village in the municipality of Ahrntal and has around 1,000 inhabitants. The village, one of the most important tourist centers in the Ahrntal Valley, lies at an altitude of 956 m above sea level.

The history of Luttach

HOW IT ALL BEGAN…

The valley bed of Luttach was once divided into a few farms, which still exist today. During the expansion of the settlement in the Middle Ages, farms were also built on the Herrenberg on the shady side.

It is striking that the Luttacher Berg was never considered for settlement, although its slopes are no steeper than others. However, they extend towards the north and this did not promise anything good for field and arable farming. Today, the valley bed, which is not very extensive, is quite densely populated.

Luttach and tourism

BACK THEN AND TODAY, TOURISM IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF OUR VILLAGE

Luttach was the first village in the Ahrntal to dedicate itself to tourism. Even before the First World War, it had the most beautiful inns and the most guests.

At that time, they came not only on the Tauferer Bahn, but also as mountaineers via the “Herrenwege” from the Zillertal Alps, some of which were built by the Austrian military. The most important was the route to the Schwarzenstein, but those who wanted to climb three-thousand-metre peaks such as the Turnerkamp, the Möseler or the Hochfeiler also preferred to use Luttach as the starting point for their tours.

Even today, the people of Luttach live mainly from tourism, agriculture, forestry and various other service professions.
