Information for Pilots in the Ahrntal Valley

Launch sites, tips & requirements

Launch sites:

  • Speikboden (approx. 2,400 m): Accessible via cable car, south and west facing, good thermals.
  • Klausberg (approx. 2,500 m): Also reachable by cable car, ideal for thermal flights, stunning views.
  • Ahornach (Acereto) (approx. 1,334 m): Above Sand in Taufers, south facing, great for soaring, thermal and cross-country flights. Access by car or shuttle bus.
  • Other smaller launch sites in the valley – local clubs or flight schools provide updated info.

Landing sites:

  • Sand in Taufers: Main landing area for flights from Speikboden, Klausberg and Ahornach. Spacious, well-marked, with info board from Falkenclub Ahrntal.
  • Depending on the flight route, other meadows may be used – observe local rules, land ownership and wind conditions.

Best time to fly:

  • May to October, with stable thermals especially in midsummer.
  • Early morning or late afternoon for calmer conditions, midday for strong thermals.

FlyCard required:

Mandatory for launching from Speikboden, Klausberg and Ahornach.
Available online or at the tourist office in Sand in Taufers.
